He served as Minister of Agriculture in 2016 and was later appointed as a member of the Jordanian National Assembly . He previously served as Prisident of the University of Jordan in Aqaba. In April 2013, he was appointed President of Mu'tah University by royal decree.
Al-Khawaldeh studied Plant Production at the University of Jordan where he earned his bachelor's and master's degrees. He obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois.
